17 Benefits of Walking

It keeps your buttocks engaged with the world.

A wise man once said that excessive sitting causes glute inactivation and atrophy. This is true, but it’s not like simply standing is enough to keep them strong and engaged. You have to walk, and walk often. To make sure the way you walk is actually activating your glutes, place your hands on each glute. You should feel your glute tense up a bit with each footfall as it accepts the load, and that same glute should tense up even more when you push off to take another step so that your hand gets a little “pushback.” Gallivant around like this, making sure each glute is working. Those buttocks! Ne’er-do-wells, the lot of ’em if you give ’em half a chance!

It modestly reduces body fat.

Walking isn’t going to get you shredded, ripped, cut, or yoked. It might not be as brutally and mechanistically effective on a minute for minute basis as other forms of exercise, but frequent walking will help anyone with two functioning legs and hip and knee joints that allow movement who would otherwise meld into the couch lose some body fat. That’s pretty cool, I think.

It improves glycemic control, especially after meals.

Just 15 minutes of walking after eating improved the blood glucose control in older people with poor glucose tolerance. Try to keep the walk as close to the meal as possible to aid in weight loss.

It improves triglyceride levels and lowers blood pressure, especially after meals.

Whether short (ten 3-minute bouts of brisk walking) or longer (one 30-minute bout of brisk walking), briskly walking after a meal lowers postprandial blood pressure and triglyceride levels.

It might help you live longer if you do it briskly (or at least presages a longer life, if not causes it).

A recent study of over 7000 male and 31000 female recreational walkers found that walking intensity predicted mortality risk. Those who walked the fastest tended to die the least. It’s important to note that this wasn’t an interventional study where walkers were coached to walk faster; this was just looking at the relationship between natural walking speed and mortality risk, so naturally slow walkers who resolve to increase their speed may not see the same relationship – but it certainly can’t hurt!

It’s well tolerated by people with arthritis (and could even improve their condition).

Arthritis patients have it tough on the exercise front. They won’t get any better avoiding exercise, but exercise tends to hurt. What to do? Walk. Walking is gentle, particularly if you perform it with proper form. And one study even found that walking (and weight lifting) improves balance in older adults with osteoarthritis.

It’s good for your brain.

Walking does much more than work the area underneath your neck. It also has extensive cognitive benefits, improving memory in seniors, cognitive control and academic performance in preadolescents (especially those who need it most), and (when done outdoors) boosting creativity in the young and healthy. The farther an older person can walk in six minutes, the better he or she performs on memory and logic tests; folks who perform poorly on the walking test tend to have reduced grey matter volume in certain sections of their brains. Aristotle’s famed tendency to walk as he taught students suddenly makes sense.

It reduces stress.

What do I do when I need to get away from a particularly stressful day in “civilization”? Go for a walk, preferably in a natural setting. For me, it’s the beach or the Malibu hills. For others, it might be the woods or even a park. Sure enough, going for a walk in the woods is a surefire way to lower cortisol.

It reduces stress even when it doesn’t.

A recent study examined the effect of forest walking on stress in young adults, finding that although chromogranin A (a biomarker of stress) increased, the subjects reported reductions in subjective perceptions of
stress (which, remember, may matter more than “objective” markers).

It boosts immune function.

Several lines of evidence point to the benefits of walking on the immune system. First, a “mere” 30 minute walk increases killer T-cells and other markers of immune function. Second, among free-living Japanese elderly, higher daily step counts correlate with improved mucosal immunity. Finally, among postmenopausal women involved in a walking training program, the normally deleterious immune effects associated with menopause were ameliorated.

It prevents falls in the elderly.

Walking on uneven, natural ground like hiking trails, improves balance and reduces falls in the elderly. “Walking programs,” which usually have elderly patients walking indoors or on treadmills as briskly as they can handle do not appear to work very well. Slow, unsteady, and meandering walks appear to be better. Don’t wait until you’re already at risk of falling, though. The earlier you start habitually walking, the better your ability to navigate the land without falling will be.

It gives you a chance to think.

When we walk, we think. And because walking is a low-difficulty endeavor, we can direct our executive functioning to more internal matters. We work through problems, come up with ideas, replay conversations, scheme, ruminate, and discover solutions. Or maybe we just think about that funny dog we saw on the way to work the other day. That’s a worthy subject, too.

It can be a kind of meditation.

Meditation is a foreign concept for many Westerners; we know about it, but we don’t know it. Even when we want to try it, having read about the benefits, we can’t quite muster the will to sit still for twenty, thirty minutes at a time. Enter the walking meditation. Do it formally, or just go for a walk and let your mind tune out from all the chatter. You’ll feel better either way.

It improves meetings.

Regular old seated meetings can be tedious, yawn-inducing beasts, even when the people and subject matter involved are interesting. Walking meetings, which are exactly what it sounds like, are growing more commonplace in the business world, and I couldn’t be happier. Seth Roberts found that replacing his seated student/teacher meetings with walking meetings was refreshing and invigorating.

It’s in your blood.

Your distant ancestors didn’t develop horribly calloused knuckles and brave savannah predators just so you could sit at the computer and devolve into an immobile blob. You come from a long and storied line of walkers. Keep the tradition alive!

It’s in your genes.

This one sounds similar to the last one, but it’s different. What I mean by “it’s in your genes” is your genes “expect” you to move around a lot at a slow pace, and walking affects how your genes are expressed. Walking has been shown, for example, to positively affect the genes responsible for fat and carbohydrate metabolism in skeletal muscle, to reduce inflammatory gene expression in adipose tissue, and to lower oxidative and inflammatory gene expression pathways in older adults.

It enables recognition of the felt presence of immediate experience.

When you drive, you can’t really focus on all the interesting stuff occurring in the world around you. Outside of what’s happening on the road, you shouldn’t focus on what’s occurring around you when you drive. Even riding a bike you tend to get tunnel vision. Walking on the other hand offers infinite chances for engagement with the outside world. See a rose? When you’re walking, you can stop and smell it. See a little path on the side of the trail heading somewhere cool? If you were driving, you’d have whizzed right past it. We all need a little more presence in our lives, and walking enables it.

The POTU Professional Gamers Are Champions

I would like to dedicate this song to the whole POTU Gaming. Special thanks to Kristoffers Co and JR Rodriguez IV. Keep up the good work. You're champions once again.  I look up to this team because they represent POTU's real life battle. We stumble and fall. We never surrender. And in the end, we are the champions.

This is how Profilers of the Unknown is when we were still struggling to make a name. It's like walking in the dark with no clue on where we're heading. I always tell everyone that no success can ever be made overnight. It requires hard work, dedication, integrity, love for what you're doing, love for others and faith. No pain, no gain.

I should have been there with you but my mission is here on CPS. Sometimes, we need to work apart to bring things together. I love you, guys, and I miss you.

A Bad TV Experience

Do not believe anything you see on TV. Validate things if you think you have to. My group and I have guested on various shows and what disappoints me is that most of the time, they omit the most substantial parts of the interview or investigation and take only those that will favor and add juice to their story. There were also instances where they would skip some footage, admitting that they got scared and didn't even care to review those. Next time, I'll have an agreement signed between my group and the programs who would guest us on TV.

When I was invited by a TV program to investigate a bridge in Pampanga where several accidents believed to be paranormal in nature happened, I gave them lots of notable reports that weren't included when they aired that segment. The only thing they've shown is me saying "It's an accident-prone area." And so??? They didn't even aired my explanation; and that's quite unfair. If the aim of these shows is to give people information, then, they should try harder to make segments like these informative.

Now, here is my own report on the real condition of the place:

1. The road has an irregular surface and the edges are sharp. If you won't be careful, you know what would possibly happen to you.

2. There is a power plant near the bridge which can cause hallucinations. When I opened the EMF meter, it immediately detected high EMF. You don't even have to aim it at the power plant. You'll get readings even when you turn your back or step away from that spot. FYI, EMF meters are not only used to detect ghosts. That is not its first function in the first place.

3. There is a cemetery right next to the bridge. If you are aware about that and you are a bit imaginative, you'd definitely drive in a hurry.

4. Vehicles that cross the area usually over speed. It's not surprising that some of them bump into each other.

5. If you are aware that the site has some kind of "haunted reputation", things might run in your head and you may start anticipating that something will happen.

Thanks to My Detractors and Bashers - I Owe You My Success

Just this week, I became a victim again of Cyber Bullying on Facebook. Though I am used to it, I still couldn't help but sigh and ask myself this question ---> "Why can't some people get a life?"

I do not intend to elaborate the story and I will not mention names because I do not want to give some people and groups free publicity. I also do not want to humiliate them that much like what they are doing to me. I wrote this blog because I want to pour my heart out and start breathing with ease again.

I posted about filing a case against these people on my FB Wall; but you know what truth is? I LIED ABOUT IT! I do not really have the intention to do that in spite of their uncontrollable behavior. I only posted that to serve as a bait...a trap that will get some people feasting over my post and doing things that will give me some sort of confirmation. May the universe forgive me for having thoughts such as these.

I wanted to know if my suspicion that a former member of my team is continuing his hate campaign against me; watching over my back and waiting for a chance to backbite me again like he did before. I came to a point of thinking that he could be behind these people. I was surprised that this guy PMed me right after I posted that statement. He wasn't even my friend on FB but he seemed to be so much updated about my actions. Is this a confirmation that I am right or am I just being imaginative? Who can really tell anyway?

I know that it may be unfair to have this kind of suspicion. But with how great the damages he did to me before, I wouldn't be surprised if ever I'll find out that he is still up to something until now. I swear, I tried my best to shake that thought off my mind. I've moved on long time ago and I continue to move forward; but I couldn't stop it from coming back because of the trauma I've experienced. No matter how mean I would appear to be right now and though I might not be able to prove my allegations, it is my right to contemplate.

I also want to see if another group of people would plunge into the issue again. That will also give me some kind of confirmation that they are stalking me and my group to fetch something to talk about and make fun of. I was not surprised anymore when I got reports that they are indeed talking about me. And I secretly laughed...

I refuse to say anything evil to anyone, but to my detractors and bashers, I would like to say "THANK YOU."

Thank you for making me stronger. And though you often tag me as PIKON, this is what I say to you; I am PROUDLY PIKON because that is much better than being BITTER. I know that I have my share of imperfections as human. I maybe brutally straightforward, tactless and stringent; but I am not a bad person. People who are working closely with me can vouch for that. If you think it is your right to question my integrity, it is also my right to be ANGRY sometimes, especially when people have gone too far. You do not seem to know your limits and that makes me sad. I wish that everyone on Earth will be happy and free-spirited. I am saying this with sincerity.

Furthermore, thank you for making me feel like a SUPERSTAR. I would like to extend my gratitude because you are giving me so much attention. I must be a very important person. Bad publicity is still publicity and I am gaining more followers because of you. Your actions seem to be working in favor of me, not against me.

My start in the paranormal field was truly painstaking and I would always look back at the times where I would often shed tears...not knowing where my initiative will take me. The only thing I have with me then is faith and a good intention. I used to fear then that I would fail. But now, I gladly look at the fruits of my labor.

I couldn't help but be happy because my team, PROFILERS OF THE UNKNOWN, is gaining more strength and credibility as time goes by. My affirmation comes from my teammates who are trustworthy, kindhearted and noble. We work together as one big happy family.

I couldn't help but rejoice whenever I see how CENTER FOR PARANORMAL STUDIES grows. And though I know for a fact that there will always be people who will still try to pull me down, the loyalty that my teammates and friends are giving me, and the support I am getting from a large number of people would be enough to keep me standing still.

Some spirits cannot get out of the dark because they don't know how to. While some spirits stay in the dark because they want to drag people to where they are. I'd rather be not like them. I'd go out of the dark to get some good works done. I do not need to speak so highly of myself at this point. I'd simply close this message with these words..

I CAN ALWAYS FORGIVE BUT I WON'T FORGET.

Our Trip to Mystical Mount Banahaw - A Nature-Embracing Adventure

In 2011, I dreamed of climbing the Mystical Mount Banahaw and in that dream, I brought 7 large candles with me.

On March 20, 2015, I, together with a few CPS members, Keith, James, Mary, Phi, Lorenz and Drew, went to one of the most enchanted mountains in the Philippines; and it is the first time of all seven of us to visit the place. We did this for the sake of trying out the experience before we offer it to the public; and the result it yielded is truly wonderful.

We called this trip A Mount Banahaw Walk to Remember.

Aside from the fact that the place is so peaceful and beautiful, the residents are very friendly. Never have we encountered anybody who is a snob. In fact, even the kids are very accommodating. The entire place is cooler compared to its neighboring sites. I was surprised to feel a sudden change in temperature upon entering its borders. The temperature is quite hot when we were on our way to Banahaw; however, when we got nearer to the mountain, I felt slightly cold.

Even the Butterflies and Dragonflies here are so friendly. One of the dragonflies that lingered with us stayed for a long time on Mary's hand.

Mystical Banahaw is a home to several caves. This one is considered a sacred cave. Phi, who is used to caving, find this one more challenging compared to other caves she's tried. That is because as you go towards the innermost part of it, the track becomes narrower and smaller.

There are several areas in Mt. Banahaw where tourists can light candles and pray. This spot is just one of those. When we were there, we encountered a group of devotees going around the place while singing beautiful hymns.

The water of Banahaw is so clear, clean, cold and refreshing. We really enjoyed soaking ourselves in it while wishing that all heaviness, troubles and sicknesses will be carried away by the running water. There is an area near the altar where residents fetch water for drinking. They also drink from the falls. The taste of the water from Banahaw is like the taste of a bottled mineral water.

The walk to the Mystical Falls is long and challenging. First, you'll have to go down to reach the falls and going back, you'll have to go up while trying to catch your breath. That's truly an effective way of burning calories.

Food and drinks are never a problem because food stalls are rampant in the location; moreover, they aren't expensive. For this reason, there is no need to bring packed meals. It is always best to keep your bags lighter when going to Banahaw to make trekking less of a hassle. On the other hand, bringing your own drinking water, extra clothing, non-slippery slippers, hiking shoes, face towels, tissue paper and head covering is advised.

CR is never a problem. There are a lot of paid toilets where guests can do their toilet things, change clothing and take a shower.

Our last stop of course is the stalls for souvenir items. Banahaw has a lot to offer when it comes to various talisman and amulets. Although sellers claim that these items are still dead and need ora, you'd definitely get enticed to buy some for yourself because they are a work of art. Aside from talismans and amulets, there are also other affordable souvenir items being sold such as t-shirts that have the name of Banahaw printed on them.

Center for Paranormal Studies occasionally offers trips to Banahaw which is inclusive of a 2-way transpo from pick up point and back, guided meditation and tour guide services. Try this adventure because a visit to Banahaw is truly an enlightening, refreshing and fun adventure. Embracing nature, for me, is still the best way to unwind.

On the other hand, do not forget to respect the sacredness of the mountain by not leaving garbage behind and not using agents that will pollute the beautiful tourist spot.

Ghost Tour: Experience a Different Kind of Tour

The idea of doing ghost tours began so many years ago when people all over the world became more and more interested in hearing ghost stories while doing an actual walk in a haunted place. In addition to that, the desire to hunt for ghosts and get an actual ghost experience became rampant everywhere.

Here in the Philippines, several travel agencies started to conduct their own haunted tours, especially during Halloween seasons. It is definitely a good idea to book with them because they have all the means to organize travel escapades; however, if you want a more meaningful night tour, I would suggest that you go with seasoned ghost hunters. There are some in the country who organize their own, like my team, Profilers of the Unknown.

First and foremost, ghost hunters like us who have been doing haunted tours for years are more experienced when it comes to going to haunted places. Take note too that we hold tours regularly and not only seasonal. To cut it short, we know what we are doing better than the rest and can handle the type of tension guests might feel during an actual visit to a haunted location. Moreover, those who want to get firsthand information about ghosts will get more interesting answers because these answers will come from people who have wider knowledge on the subject. You'll also get more information about what ghosts are and what they are not, the reasons why you shouldn't really fear them, to mention a few.

Going to a night tour with real ghost hunters who know their responsibilities is beneficial to those who are doing a research as it is guaranteed educational. You can even experience an actual and direct guidance on ghost hunting if you want that experience; something that a regular ghost tour with travel agencies may not give you.

A ghost tour may be a different type of adventure; however, its intention is not to scare people but rather help them get more understanding of the unknown while having fun and enjoying the activity. On the other hand, if you are pregnant, having a weak heart or not really into this type of adventure, it will be best to set aside the idea of going until such time comes when you're pretty sure that you're ready to go.

Your safety, however, is of utmost importance. An authentic ghost tour will make sure that you will get the enjoyment you deserve while keeping you safe and sound.

With Profilers of the Unknown, you can book for ghost tours all year round, day or night. You do not have to wait for another Halloween. You can visit the most haunted places in the Philippines with us any time of the year.
